#252 You Ask, We Answer - 42

Wednesday May 26, 2021

Wednesday May 26, 2021

On the last Wednesday of every month, Christy & Michelle answer listener questions live on the show - YAWA! This month we're answering questions about: Destination wedding logistics / Hybrid wedding invitations / Food for a multi-cultural wedding / Surprise pregnancy while wedding planning / who to share wedding excitement with when nobody you're around regularly are invited to the wedding.Question #1: VoicemailCouple lives in Hawaii and family lives on the mainland. They have decided to have wedding in Hawaii but they have not resolved the guest list issue. They have a lot of potential guests, large family, etc. There are still some COVID restrictions in place, max 100 people including wedding staff. It’s also later next year, so they might not have the same restrictions. They don’t want to hurt feelings, but make sure people know about the limits. What should they do with Save The Dates? How can we make our guests feel welcomed to the destination?Question #2:We have also decided to stream our wedding to include family members we can’t invite to physically come to the wedding. Because of this, we are having 3 types of invitations: 1) physical guest invitation 2) virtual guest invitation 3) hybrid invitation where part of a single household is invited physically and the other is virtually. My question is how to address these hybrid invitations.Question 3:My fiancé and I are having our wedding in October 2022 and we’re starting to plan things out and create a budget and look at vendors etc etc. My fiancé, Jonathan, is Mexican and I’m white. I want to provide other options for members of my family who maybe don’t eat pork and are probably expecting other options such as chicken or beef. Our plan for the Mexican food is to buy the carnitas already cooked and then my future MIL would be making all the rice and beans, and we would have a buffet style. What I am wondering is: are we able to do that, but also have a catering company as well to provide more options for my side of the family and other friends of ours who maybe aren’t too keen on Mexican food?Question # 4: VoicemailBride is pregnant and family is saying they need to wed before delivery. But it isn’t what she wants and isn’t sure how to tell them they don’t want a courthouse wedding. Also, she wants to know how to feel like a bride in this season, planning for a baby and not really focusing on the wedding.Question #5:Is there an unspoken code to who you can talk to about wedding planning details when you're spending so much time on it and just so excited? Do you have to reciprocate bridal party memberships, and how can you break it to someone if you won't reciprocate, nor likely give an invite to them?Links We Referencedzola.com/bigwedding - SAVE50manlybands.com/bigweddingThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

#251 This One’s for the Grooms

Wednesday May 19, 2021

Wednesday May 19, 2021

In this episode, we're calling bullsh#t on the wedding being "all about the bride". A wedding is the union of 2 people. Let's pay attention and pamper each them...equally!The dedicated groomsmen coordinator concept began to develop as founder Cameron Fontaine decided to elevate the experience of his groom clients. While working as the Made-To-Measure specialist for a luxury menswear retailer, clients would come in to have bow ties made within an hour of their wedding. While attending to these sometimes frantic gentlemen, Cameron realized that the bride would never have to leave her room for anything on her wedding day. Why should the groom have to?After identifying this void in the wedding service industry, Cameron began to offer what is now referred to as "Day-of Groomsmen Concierge”.These services included pressing shirts, primping groomsmen, staging photography, pinning boutonnières, and of course tying bow ties.Big Takeaways
When it comes to the wedding day between a bride and groom, the bride is often pampered in unexpected ways, while the groom doesn’t even expect special treatment. Think about the things the groom wants from his experience, allow room for a little selfishness in the brainstorming time.
The special day should be special for both of the couple! There can be a lot of missed moments from things being done in the old way, like the groom getting dressed.
When planning with the photographer, they don’t need as much time in the groom’s room, but it can be meaningful to have them pop in to take photos of the "getting ready" process too.
All this translates to two grooms as well!
Cameron’s Tips for getting dressed on the wedding day
Wear your pants at their proper height
No show socks - loafers are popular
Know the proper way to tuck your shirt
Wear suspenders with a tuxedo, and a belt with a suit
Have an emergency sewing kit and lint roller on hand
Have someone else put on your cuff links and use this as a photo op
Everyone should get dressed at the same time for the photos
Have a second shirt handy

#250 Spotlight Series: SuitShop

Wednesday May 12, 2021

Wednesday May 12, 2021

Gone are the days of calling that big tux rental place. Gone are the days of seeing your Groomsmen wearing that ill-fitting suit. Gone are the days of spending hundreds of dollars on renting a tux or suit that's been worn by a hundred people before you...yuck. Enter SuitShop!
SuitShop (formerly The Groomsman Suit) is changing the old, archaic way of suiting. They are an all-inclusive, brilliant, affordable, excellent quality brand. Listen in as Christy and Michelle interview co-founders Jeanne Foley & Diana Ganz, who by the way have been friends since the 3rd grade! Oh, and you're welcome! ;)
SuitShop is the first and only brand to offer a coordinated collection of suiting for men, women, non-binary individuals, and children. They’re very size-inclusive, offering one of the largest size ranges of any brand. Additionally, their three adult fits are interchangeable allowing individuals to mix and match combinations to find a fit they prefer.
Jeanne Foley is a fashion industry expert and entrepreneur who co-founded The Groomsman Suit in 2016. Jeanne spent 12+ years in the fashion industry, engineering apparel fit & construction as a Technical Designer for Under Armour, Abercrombie & Fitch and Talbots. She earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Fashion Design from the Illinois Institute of Art.
Prior to co-founding The Groomsman Suit, Diana Ganz served as Chief Executive Officer for two different Boston based companies. She earned her degree in Biopsychology from the University of Michigan and graduated with an MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
Together, they join us to talk about building a company, friendship in business, rebranding, and great suits.
*Big Takeaways *
SuitShop provides a high-quality suit that looks great, fits very well, is comfortable, and affordable.
While other retailers offer sets and extremely high-priced options for custom orders, SuitShop offer separates so you can find the right pieces for you. They are not ‘true custom’ but they have every size imaginable, and you can mix and match. The company takes pride in its quality and sizing.
Fit is a priority at SuitShop! If a customer doesn't know their size at all - the technology on their site asks questions like height, weight, age, shoe size, and typical pants waist size. The system then calculates with the fit finder and suggests the best-fit options. From there, customers can do virtual appointments and talk to a team member. Their suits are lightweight, and travel well!
The price point is between $194 and $294. Their suits are less expensive or the same price as a rental. They offer a free at-home 7-day trial with a free exchange policy.
They also offer shoes, ties, shirts, accessories and more.

Quotes
“When times get really tough, you have to have that person that’s just your rock.” - Diana
“Our supply chain is super lean. We manufacture our fabric from raw materials, and we are really excited to be working on new material with stretch and recycled components, which is super important in the fashion industry.” - Jeanne
“We get so many customers saying ‘I really didn’t think I would get a suit that fit me ever, off the rack, at this price point.’ And they’re always amazed.” - Jeanne

Hosts of the new unscripted Netflix show, “Marriage or Mortgage,” Sarah Miller and Nichole Holmes are our guests on this one!Sarah Miller is a wedding planner and Nichole Holmes works in real estate. The show centers around trying to convince a client to either choose the house or choose the wedding. Also on this episode, have the pleasure of interviewing Denise & Nick who were one of the couples on the show. Denise & Nick were fetatured on episode 2 and chose....Mortgage! tThey share the decision to pick a house over a wedding. As an added bonus, we had a few TBWPP listeners and fans of Marriage of Mortgage on the Zoom call so they would have an opportunity to watch and ask questions.Big TakeawaysWhen it comes to having a wedding planner, a huge bonus is their connections. Sarah, for instance, has planned weddings in Nashville for many years, and has strong ties with her vendors. She can help get costs down, and find the best team for couple's big day.Remember the most important part of the decision making is how you begin the commitment you give to each other. You can get a house without getting married. You can get married without a wedding, etc.Questions from the Zoom audience:Q: Is there a season 2 in the works?A: Not sure yet! Keep watching and get the numbers in.Q: Did you ever want to shake someone to choose the house over the wedding?A: Every one! Ultimately they get to choose.Links We Referencednetflix.com/title/81113929Southern Vine & Co.The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

Finally, governments are starting to pay attention to the Live Events Industry. We are getting more defined guidance on how we can safely hold wedding celebrations. It can be hard to navigate through this constantly changing information. We hope this episode will give you some tips on how to navigate both gathering info in the county your wedding will take place and how to communicate with your guests and vendor team. Decisions need to be made and we want to arm you with as much information as we can.Guest #1: Elisabeth Kramer is a wedding planner from Portland, Oregon and creator of Altared, an international event for wedding vendors who want to change the world. Addressing the concerns of the pandemic, and weddings being cancelled, delayed, etc., we cover all things covid and what is legal when hosting a wedding during a pandemic.Guest #2: Kate Whelan of the California Events Coalition joins us also (she was last on Episode #214) to share where and how to find resources for weddings, and live events country-wide!Big TakeawaysWhen it comes to finding information on what your state is requiring for weddings, it can be very difficult. Some states have websites, and others don’t. Some have confusing wording, etc. Some people have had weddings that gently ignored some of the pandemic rules and regulations and the day is so stressful. It is not a total relaxation and escape from the pandemic, every one will have it on their mind the whole time. Usually for the ceremony, people find it easy to obey the rules and keep their masks on, etc. But when it’s the reception, the rules tend to fall to the wayside.Rules need to be set, in order for people to relax and have a safe day. Otherwise, it’s sort of hovering over the whole day.Is it okay to only invite those who are vaccinated to your wedding?
Yes, because it’s your day and you get to set the tone for your day. It is complicated and difficult, but ultimately you and your partner get to set the rules for how you want your marriage to start.
Elisabeth has templates on her website on how to have these conversations!
Can you ask your vendors if they are vaccinated?
You can ask. They might not want to answer. Be respectful. You are allowed to turn them down should it feel needed.
Share your COVID regulations that you created for the wedding with your vendors.
HIPAA is a buzz word and term being thrown around a lot these days, but it is not actually being applied correctly. It is far more about the exchanging of medical information without permission between professionals. What is important is knowing that the rules are constantly changing, and respect is important. With these conversations, meet everyone at a place of empathy, but know what your boundaries are.If this is all too much, do it next year. Health matters.Elisabeth recommends deciding your guidelines, and whole wedding plan idea 60 days before your wedding date.Clubhouse chats with the California Events Coalition are run every Tuesday at 12PM PST.The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

#247 You Ask, We Answer - 41

Wednesday Apr 28, 2021

Wednesday Apr 28, 2021

On the last Wednesday of every month, Christy & Michelle answer listener questions live on the show - YAWA! This month we're answering questions about: Sending thank you notes early. Floor Plans & flow of events. Starting over with wedding plans cause things are getting too complicated. Saying no to parents about an after-party. FMIL wants a separate wedding weekend party just for her side of the family. How much to tip a wedding planner and more!Question #1: Thank you notes & Event Flow
We have already received wedding gifts from a few eager friends and family members. Our wedding is in late June. Should we send out our "thank you" notes now, or wait until after the wedding? It seems like a long time between now and June to not thank them for the gift.
We are struggling with our wedding floor plan/flow of events. Do you think three separate spaces is too much? Should we combine the cocktail hour and dinner/reception to be in the same space even though it will be kind of akward, or add a third location?
Question #2:Though the wedding is not for another year, budgets are a bit more of a concern than pre- covid. They had a wedding planned a bit out of town, with shuttles, a live band, etc, but wonder if they should just cancel those plans and move the ceremony into town.Question #3: Her fiance's parents want to have an after party and she does not want that. They are having a brunch wedding. The fiancé’s dad wants to have a party after the brunch, and the couple does not feel totally comfortable with that. She is wondering how to communicate this, and help him see their point of view. They do want to have a bigger party, reception in another year when hopefully the pandemic is ove, it feels safer, and they can gather without masks.Question #4: How much should we tip our planner? The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

Today we talk about some easy ways to make your wedding more sustainable / Green. Remember it is not all or nothing, do what you can! Our guest is Sarah Baillie is a sustainable wedding expert who educates soon-to-wed couples on how to plan the unique wedding of their dreams while embracing their eco-conscious values. Sarah also oversees SoKind, an alternative gift registry, where couples can register for secondhand or homemade gifts, charitable donations, gifts of time or service, experiences, and more.Big TakeawaysWhile there are less meals and less people typically at a destination wedding, local weddings are actually more environmentally friendly. Flying vs driving is a big difference, flying emits about 75x the emissions. When you have your ceremony and reception in one place, you reduce emissions, and it does make the day a lot easier. If you do have to go from a point A to point, having a shuttle bus is a much more efficient means of travel than everyone driving separately.Choosing a place that is already pretty can reduce costs and waste of one-time use decorations. Sarah opted for clutches instead of flowers for herself and her wedding party. This was another way she was able to reduce waste, plus she had the added bonus of having a bag to put her vows in.Opting out of red meat, or going full vegetarian are great ways to reduce your carbon foot print. Because Sarah is vegetarian and her partner is not, they decided to have entirely vegetarian appetizers, and chicken and fish for the entree.Finding a vintage, or gently worn wedding gown can be a game changer. Free Ever After Bridal is the place that Sarah went, and was able to have the whole experience of the dressing room and trying many different styles and options.Facebook marketplace and Buy Nothing groups are a great option for decor. In Buy Nothing, you could potentially give or receive the exact items you are looking for without any cost associated. Taking a little time to look for items somewhere other than amazon, or where you would have to buy new can be great for sustainability.Links We ReferencedWildlife-Friendly Wedding Calculatorwildlifefriendlywedding.orgAdventure Aquarium (Sarah's Wedding Venue)Free Ever After Bridal (Where Sarah bought her wedding gown)So Kind Registry (Alternative Gift Registry)Center For Biological DiversityCenter For Biological Diveristy on InstagramCenter For Biological Diversity on TwitterThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

Jamie Lee is a stand-up comedian, actor, and established television writer/producer whom Elle Magazine recently named one of the top comedians to watch. In December 2016, Lee released her debut book Weddiculous (Harper Collins), which quickly rose to #1 on Bustle.com’s list of best wedding books. The book was adapted as an upcoming series, The Wedding Coach, for Netflix hosted and Executive Produced by Jamie. It premiered on April 7th, 2021.Jamie starred as Ali Reissen, the female lead in the second season of the Judd Apatow-produced HBO series CRASHING, opposite Pete Holmes. Jamie wrote and starred in “The Viewing Party” episode of CRASHING, which was directed by Judd Apatow and honored by the New York Times in their piece on The Best TV Episodes of 2019.In addition to being one of the core cast members of MTV’s hit show “Girl Code,” Lee has appeared on “Conan,” “The Late Late Show with James Corden,” “Last Call with Carson Daly,” “Chelsea Lately” and “@Midnight.”Big TakeawaysWhen it came to planning her own wedding, and the day of, Jamie’s favorite parts were in the little pieces in the in-betweens. Like a walk to get iced coffee, and moments of lightness spontaneity that helped her snap out of the dreamlike flow of the day.Find people that make you feel calm, and cared for to surround you on your big day. It can be very stressful, and having people around that want to help and do so with ease can make all the difference.Jamie’s experience with her wedding planner (who was essentially a Venue Coordinator) was not super positive. Ultimately the planner did not ease the duties and stresses of the day in the way that would have actually been helpful. Do not just suffer through a bad planner! Wedfuly is at the helm of disrupting the wedding industry, removing financial, geographical, and health barriers — allowing anyone, anywhere to get married with all their loved ones in attendance. We are joined today by two couples who got married using Wedfuly, and Caroline Creidenberg - Founder and CEO.Wedfuly started in 2017 with a mission to use technology to democratize the wedding industry via online wedding planning. When the pandemic hit in March of 2020, they innovated to help their couples navigate their plans. One Zoom wedding later, they were onto something! Since then, they’ve planned and produced hundreds of virtual weddings.Big TakeawaysFor Kelly and Joe, they decided to have a hybrid-wedding. They had about 20 in-person guests, prioritizing family, and the rest were invited virtually. Using zoom, they were able to have so much interaction, and really enjoy the day with the guests all over the world. In the end, the people that were sad about not being there in person found that the way Wedfuly set up the day made everyone feel very included and in the moment.Kat and Han had completely planned and booked their wedding before the pandemic hit. They decided to cancel everything, and move the party to their backyard. Instead of rescheduling, it felt better to just switch the plans. Kat admits it was very very hard to make this decision, but ultimately was happy they went through with the changes. Her biggest tip was to feel the sadness, ugly cry, and then move on. Don’t avoid the mourning of that loss. Through working with Wedfuly, they were able to make a day that felt so complete, and included everyone, even those far away.A virtual wedding does not have to be a passive guest event. Wedfuly encourages the guests to dress up, turn cameras on, and be involved as much as possible throughout the day. The guests log in about 30 minutes before the wedding, and the team is able to help with any technical issues, share video and photos, and help them get settled before the big event starts. After the ceremony, they make time for an intermission. This is a good time for the guests to refill their drinks, use the rest room, etc. Wedfuly started as a virtual wedding planning service, but Caroline and her team adjusted quickly and started hosting full-virtual weddings. In 2020, they did over 500!Wedfuly is 100% virtual, so they require the couple to have a person on-site available as a contact. Some couples hire professional audio/video companies to have an elevated video experience.Links We ReferencedWedfuly & TBWPP ($100 off a Wedfuly package)Kelly & Joe's WeddingKatherine & Han's WeddingThe Big Wedding Planning Master ClassThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

#243 You Ask, We Answer - 40

Wednesday Mar 31, 2021

Wednesday Mar 31, 2021

On the last Wednesday of every month, we answer wedding planning questions from our listeners. This month, we are talking about Masks, Furniture Rental, Transportation, uneven wedding party, invitation etiquette, and racist family members.Question #1: Furniture Rental & TransportationFiancé and her are getting married in Northern California. Regulations are allowing 25% capacity, dropping guest list from 180 to about 45. It is possible that the number would change before their wedding in six months. When and how should I book vendors that require knowing quantities? They are holding out on furniture rentals and a shuttle service. They do not want to put money down on the vendors until they know for sure how many guests there will be.Question #2: Uneven Wedding PartyWhat to do if your significant other is very friendly and fun and has a TON of friends, where the other person has a smaller number of more intimate relationships. One person thinks it would be beautiful to just have one person each making up bridal party and standing with us when we say vows. That way expenses on guests are kept down since 5+ girls won’t have to buy dress’s, shoes, makeup, hair, etc. and the guys won’t have to all rent the same tux, shoes, etc. However, the other partner feels they want to recognize their friends with a 10+ person groomsmen party. HELP!!Question #3: Invitations / Etiquette - CovidI need to develop a message for the main invitation (for the remainder of the guests) that explains it is a small wedding and not everyone can attend it, but they are invited to the reception. We each have parents taking it personally that we can't invite additional people and feel the word "private" will offend people. Do you have any advice on how to word this on an invitation to these reception-only guests?Question #4: MasksI bought disposable masks and want to place them at a table we have at the entry of our home, but I don’t know what’s the best and safest way to present them. Do I use a glass box where people can open it and grab one, put them on a fancy serving tray? Should I individually wrap them in a plastic bag?Question #5: Ooh hoo! Racist Cousins Invited to the WeddingSince we have to assume SOME of the "problem" people will attend our wedding, how do we go about organizing the seating chart to minimize potential conflict? Any other tips not related to the seating chart would be great too!Links We Referencedhttps://www.thebigweddingplanningmasterclass.com/onetruelovevintage.comcaliforniaeventscoalition.comabbeyrentssf.comzola.com/bigwedding (Use Promo: SAVE50)manlybands.com/bigwedding (21% off + free silicone ring)The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.
