We are so happy to have had Mr. David Tutera as our guest this week. With 35 years, planning events, David is sharing a plethora of valuable tips and fun stories. Not only is this a great interview, but 5 lucky listeners, planning their own weddings were able to ask David their own questions. So much amazingness happening on this one!David Tutera, entertaining expert, event designer, motivational speaker, TV personality, fashion designer, lifestyle brand and author, is hailed as an artistic visionary whose ability, uniquely creative talents and passion for designing has made him a tremendous success in the event and lifestyle arena. David's specialty is creating one of a kind celebrations that truly represent the honoree(s).Big TakeawaysWhen it comes to relating to your clients, as a planner, it makes sense that you can get caught up in all the details. A lot of planners can get disconnected from their clients in this process. It is so important to invest your heart and mind into what the couple is looking for. David believes that he has really been given a unique opportunity to create a special moment and experience that will be remembered on a totally different level than any one element of the wedding.A good planner emotes all of this, and shows that they are there for them.It is so important to LOVE your planner. This relationship is monumental to the process of planning. Some days will be hard, but knowing that your planner loves and cares deeply is crucial. When it comes to the way things have changed over time, there are still a lot of strongholds on hold traditions and ways of being. Openness to what is real, and meaningful to the couple, and to the planner are so much more important to fitting into the image of what a perfect wedding is.David has found the vows to be one of the most important things you want to hear. The nervousness is natural, but you can never do that again. He really encourages breaking through that.Only look at what you can afford to do. You don’t need to go into debt to plan a wedding.David’s top priorities with the budget:

Visuals
It’s about not spending money you don’t have! Work within your own reality. A perfectly awesome wedding can be created with your budget. We are celebrating! And as a result, we are flipping the script. Mark ALLEN Groleau of Unboring Officiant interviews us, Michelle and Christy, as we talk about how we met, what brought us together, and all about the interactive new Wedding Planning Master Class we've created for you. It’s HERE! That’s right, after a full year of blood, sweat and tears, The Big Wedding Planning Master Class is LIVE! We have put our "all" into this digital course and we are sharing why THIS DIGITAL COURSE IS GOING TO CHANGE YOUR WEDDING PLANNING LIFE AND THE WEDDING PLANNING INDUSTRY!Big TakeawaysWhen putting together the idea of both the podcast, and The Big Wedding Planning Master Class, Michelle and Christy realized there was a need for more accessible information about how to plan a wedding. We have interacted with thousands of listeners, planning their weddings, who do not have the luxury of hiring a wedding planner. So much of wedding planning is administrative work, the class felt like a natural extension to the free content we are already giving with the podcast.Chapter 1: Foundation, priorities, budget, guest list, planning time line, designChapter 2: Hiring your team, finding your venue(s), transportation, hotel room blocks, the Mid-planning checklistChapter 3: EVERYTHING included in Month-of coordination. Also a great asset to those couples who have a Coordinator included with their venue! We had a live audience on this recording and here are there questions & our answers:What’s the best package for me, if I already have all my vendors, but I want to organize myself?Chapter 3 is where to focus! There are three chapters all together.Does this Master Class address pandemic weddings or the need to quickly pivot weddings? We mention the pandemic here and there. But there is nothing specifically aimed at that. It is structured to help you feel in control in case you need to pivot or make changes quickly. Once you have purchased the class, we are available through the comments section in case you need that resource later on.What can we expect when we get the package? It is majority instructional. The videos are lecture style, and then we use a screen share to show how to use the templates where you can follow along.Links We Referencedwww.thebigweddingplanningmasterclass.comUnboring Wedding AcademyFiresideThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

Jenny married Robin on March 17, 2018. Listen as Jenny tells Christy & Michelle all about it. From their fun & crazy first date to a $100K wedding that they loved so much and do not regret a penny spent.Jenny Block began her career in words teaching college English in Virginia. Before too long, she found herself writing articles and books about everything from art to rock climbing to finding love. After that came radio and television appearances, as well as speaking engagements at universities, at museums, and even on cruise ships. She has traveled the world and has had the pleasure of meeting and working with all kinds of people from all kinds of places doing all kinds of things. That’s when she discovered her magic-bringing out That Unicorn in all of us. Now, Jenny spends her time and her words living her truth and sharing her shine on a lake in Nowhere, Texas with her wife Robin and her two dogs: Chihuahua-terrier Walter and Chihuahua-Dachshund Aurora.Big Takeaways
Having a designer was one of Jenny’s favorite choices. It helped with tie breaking and helping pull the elements together to make a beautiful wedding.
There are brokers that re-sell gowns that rich folks buy and never pick up. Jenny was able to get a $15,000 dress for $4,000. yourdreamdress.com is where she purchased!
Jenny’s biggest regret was not getting a videographer. She put all her focus on a photographer and ultimately, the cost stopped her from getting the videographer.
Because of the nature of a lesbian wedding, there was more focus on Jenny wearing the gown. This made Robin feel less important on that day. It can be crucial to make sure there is equity focused on the couple. Equal pictures of both people, etc.
Do less than what you can afford. Think about what is the most important parts of the day, and recognize which parts don’t matter at all. For Jenny, she just wanted to be able to wear a beautiful gown, she didn’t really care where the wedding happening.

If you and your partner were able to take a personality type indicator test, you would learn a lot about each. You would also, approach wedding planning differently. Actually, you would likely approach your relationship differently. Christy & Michelle took the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment and were quite surprised by some of the results given to them by the Couple's Coach, Chelsea Winer.Chelsea Winer, soon to be Chelsea Lombrozo, is a trained leadership and communication expert that elevates couples from good to great. Guided by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator personality assessment, Chelsea coaches couples to help ease the stress of wedding planning and to better communicate with each other. Her mission is to unite couples by providing the perfect blend of tangible takeaways plus reflective resources to make a lasting impact on your relationship. Consider Chelsea your personal couples coach!Big Takeaways
No matter your personality type, come from a place of patience and understanding. There is no wrong combination of types, but respect is what ultimately works.
When you are taking the assessment, think of you in every aspect of your life. And pick answers based off of what comes most naturally to you.
Pre-martial coaching is a wonderful way to understand how to work the best way possible with your partner.
With MBTI, it is important that the words and types have their own meanings and weight behind them. Someone like Chelsea can be very important to help you fully understand because she has studied and become certified in this field.
There is no magic combo that makes the best couple. The most important thing is to learn how to communicate with each other. Know how to compromise, listen, and understand each other.
Without understanding each other’s minds and where all the choices are coming from, or at least allowing room for curiosity and exploration, you may find certain blocks and disagreements with your partner. But the good thing is knowledge is power. And someone like Chelsea, and something like the MBTI can really help you understand each other.

#238 You Ask, We Answer - 39

Wednesday Feb 24, 2021

Wednesday Feb 24, 2021

On the last Wednesday of every month, we answer wedding planning questions from our listeners.Listen and learn peeps!A voicemail from a listener who did not leave her name, but left a very special giftThis listener just has too many friends to choose a wedding party/bridesmaids. She wants all 16 friends and 3 sisters to be Included in a special way. She sent everybody a poem she wrote for them expressing the situation and how important they all are to her. She invited them all to Officially be part of "my I do crew” and sent a checklist / sign up sheet of options of things they can do to participate in the planning and wedding day.Email Question #1: Guest Book Ideas!I have so many questions for you so I am sure this is not the only email that you will be getting from me, but I have a question about my guestbook. I just listened to your quick focus back in 2017 about the guestbook, but I need your opinion. We have an idea of ordering a vinyl record of the song that we dance our first dance to. We thought it would be cool to have our guests sign the record and have it framed and up in our future home. With that being said, i’m sure we won’t be able to read every person’s signature. Do we need a formal guest book as well as the vinyl record? We will have our guests addresses if we need them (from the invites) and we will know who ends up attending the wedding, right?Voicemail Question #2: My fiance does'nt know how to handle his 2 Best Men who have been in a 12 year fight. The wedding is in October 2021. He only asked 1 of his 2 friends so far, because they’ve had a rift for the past 12 years. He wants both of them to be part of his wedding. She wants to say something and jump in, but her fiancé wants to handle it on his own, but hasn't done it yet. What should she do?Email Question #3: Should we have a mock, 2nd ceremony? My fiancé and I are planning our July 2021 wedding. Our ceremony will be held at a chapel and our reception will be held at an "alumni center". Both are through a local university. We have a slight problem....Our reception is allowing 50 guests, but the chapel is only allowing 40 people total inside, which includes our vendors and 2 of their staff members. We are looking at only being able to invite 32-34 people to the ceremony. We are not willing to move our ceremony since the chapel was the reason why we are having the wedding in the city that we are. We would really love to do a quick second ceremony (10 min tops) for everyone, so those who didn't get to go to our actual ceremony feel included in the day. It would be after cocktail hourand before dinner. We just aren't sure what we should say or do for our second ceremony. We will be walking in together to signify our new marriage. No family or wedding party will be walking in. Do we do traditional vows and exchange rings again? or do something completely different? We just don't know where to start. My brother-in-law will be the "officiant/speaker" for this second ceremony. Maybe we just need a bottle of wine to spark some creativity, lol, but we are both feeling stuck. The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

You have been asking for an episode like this for a while and we finally did it! This is EVERYTHING you need to know when going wedding dress shopping. Who to bring, who NOT to bring. How to choose a boutique. What to expect from a sales person at the boutique and and how everyone’s experience is deeply personal and unique. Our guest Maya Holihan has been a wedding dress expert since 2004.Maya Holihan has spent nearly the entirety of her 25-year career in the luxury goods industry, which began with Gianni Versace and then Vera Wang, before purchasing her first bridal shop in 2004. Prior to founding EWedded she was the proprietor of multiple bridal businesses. She’s the author of a new book for brides-to-be titled Happily Altered After and hosts a podcast with the same name and converses with industry experts about wedding trends and the nuances of the planning process.Big Takeaways
Don’t try on dresses until you are ready to buy a dress! You might fall in love, so be ready to spend the money when you go in.
Be honest with yourself. Understand what environment will make the best experience for you. Do the research about budget, size range, etc. Check out the website of each store. Call the store.
Great service at a bridal salon should absolutely include preparation, listening, and transparency.
When it comes to dress sizes, the salon is buying sizes in the most common sizes (8-16) for trying on. They are not trying to discriminate. This is yet another reason why shopping somewhere with caring, knowledgable staff is important. They can and want to work with you to make an incredible experience. Make sure that alterations are part of your budget and planning time.
If you have particular gowns made by a designer you want to try on, call and see if the store can get them in for you to try on.
The more people you bring, the less the shopping experience is about you. Bring the people that you love and know will give you the best advice. Toxicity doesn’t disappear just because you are getting married. Maya says 4 is the ABSOLUTE max, but ultimately believes a bride should go by herself in the first meeting/try-on.
Extend yourself and others grace. Be flexible with your ultimate goal in mind.

Jaz and Rodney are back! They originally joined us to talk about "Wedding Planning While Black in Episode #204 and today they share the retrospective of their magical wedding that took place in October 2020.After a constantly changing and shifting planning process, they finally wed in Palm Springs with their family. Making a much smaller and much more intimate day for celebrating and as you will hear, it was magical!Big Takeaways
The planner was an ABSOLUTE must-have. Having them their helped everything feel so much smoother and relaxing.
When it came to planning, they prioritized what was most important for them. In the end, with just their family present, they were able to use their full budget to make an even more fabulous day.
Speak up! Try it. It might not work every time, but it is worth it. It’s better to know if it’s time to step away from a vendor than to drag it out because of fear to speak up.
Making sure people feel comfortable makes all the difference.

What if your wedding was designed using a holistic approach focused on people and not things? How could you make sure that everyone at your wedding will feel like their presence is an integral part of the celebration? Listen in as Michelle interview's Experiential Designer, Julie Comfort, and learn how to do all this and more.As a destination wedding photographer for ten years, Julie Comfort attended over 250 weddings in 15 countries across 5 continents, covering a staggering number of cultures, traditions, and venues, yet often feeling a huge missed potential for more personalization and connection. Ready for a new adventure, she moved to Berlin in 2015 and studied experience design at Kaospilot, where she immediately recognized that a holistic design approach focused on people not things was the missing ingredient for truly meaningful and magical weddings. Julie founded The Comfort Studio, an experience design consultancy dedicated to designing celebrations with intention, heart, and wild creativity.Julie designs weddings that elicit the desired emotion in your guests. Joy, happiness, peace, etc. This helps create weddings that are an entire experience.Big Takeaways
Think about how you want people to feel. Start with how you DON’T want them to feel and work from there.
If you don’t want your guests to feel awkward at a table of strangers, have a table host for each table! Someone assigned to welcome people to the table, pour wine, make introductions, etc. Think of which of your friends, at each table, that would be great at doing this and reach out to them before hand. Tell them why you chose them.
People love to help in small and big ways. Having come from the world from destination weddings, Julie really recommends including the guests in meaningful ways. When they just feel like an audience, the wedding is less of an experience and more of a show, they won’t feel as important to the big day.
In the future, it will be even more important to design around the people, and less on the spectacle of the big day. Think about a dinner party and how people are engaged. Connection is key.

#234 You Ask, We Answer - 38

Wednesday Jan 27, 2021

Wednesday Jan 27, 2021

On the last Wednesday of every month, we answer wedding planning questions from our listeners. These are always chock full of information that EVERYONE can benefit from. We have so much fun and we love our listeners for reaching out and interacting with us. Listen and learn, peeps!Do YOU have a wedding planning question? Call and leave us a voicemail at 415-723-1625 -or- email us thebigweddingplanningpodcast@gmail.comQuestion #1 (Voicemail)How can I involve my fiancé’s family, that lives in Texas, in the wedding planning and events?Question #2My fiancé and I live in NYC and are getting married in South Florida in the end of February 2022. We are planning on a smaller wedding of between 75-85 people. I am a planner by nature and we have already hired all of our major vendors (venue, caterer, photographer, florist/ designer, videographer, DJ, photo booth). When is the appropriate time to either reach out to my designer (or any vendor for that matter) or expect her to reach out to me to discuss design ideas or changes? Would it be too much to ask her to do a walk through of the venue with us or meet with me at her showroom if we are down there in May, which is still 10 months out from our wedding?Question #3 is not a question, but our listener Sarah wanted to share that she has grown to love her wedding dress more and more. Even though she did not cry or get emotional on the day she bought it.Question #4We plan to get married in October 2022. I’m trying to figure out what I want and can afford first. And we’re going to start looking at venues this month. I’m not a huge fan of traditional weddings, or the traditions that go along with them, but I’m concerned about ruffling feathers by not having a bridal party. I have a few people who I don’t want to choose between for MOH and I don’t want my future sister-in-law in my wedding and I know if I had a bridal party and excluded her I’d have lots of blowback. Also none of the guys that my fiancé would want as groomsmen would be able to afford the tux rentals so we’d have to foot that bill. I think by foregoing the bridal party entirely all of us will save money and hurt feelings, especially because we still intend to have these people be involved throughout the wedding in other waysand with the Bridal shower and bachelor/bachelorette parties. Does this seem reasonable? The first time I saw a wedding without a bridal party I couldn’t get it out of my head, it made too much sense to me.Also because I want to skip the bridal party I don’t see the need to have an elaborate rehearsal dinner. Both of our families are not well off, but I feel like my MIL believes in the traditional wedding cost breakdown because shortly after our engagement she mentioned the rehearsal dinner would be covered by them. I’d much prefer she handle some other cost because our rehearsal is just going to be our parents, us, the officiant, and maybe 1-2 others (haven’t decided if I want a flower man or whatever). I need help here.Links We Referenced:The Big Wedding Planning Master ClassThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

Chaya and Morgan join today to talk about how the ‘biggest, queerest wedding of the year’ surprised even the two brides.Theirs was a 2020, wedding that happened during the Pandemic which as you can guess turned into something totally different than what was planned. Like way different! Like 10,0000 people watching the live stream on Facebook, kind of different! Using the internet’s wide resources of queer, BIPOC, they were able to pull off a beautiful day.The New York Times wrote an article about their wedding and describe's Chaya's career as follows: "Ms. Milchtein, 25, has an eclectic career as a style influencer, writer and automotive educator. Her website and blog is called Mechanic Shop Femme, where she also writes about plus-size fashion.”Chaya also teaches online classes for car maintenance, how to buy - best way to insure - how to not get scammed. She's an automotive educator, writer and speaker - with an empowerment platform.Big Takeaways
