We laugh a lot in this one as we talk with author Laura Willcox about her book, I Am Bride. Laura is a hilarious comedienne, actress, and tv writer. She has appeared on FX's You're The Worst, Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer, MTV's Hey Girl, and UCB’s Trying, and has written for Girl Code, The New Yorker, Cosmopolitan, Jezebel and more. She planned her own wedding and found the experience mind-boggling. She wrote several wedding related articles and then wrote “I Am Bride: How to Take the WE out of Wedding (and other useful advice)” a satirical wedding planning book. It’s funny, dark, insightful and full of horrific advice for brides and grooms.“This book was very cathartic for me as I planned my big dumb wedding and I hope it'll help you as you plan your big dumb wedding too.” - Author’s note“The first book from Upright Citizens Brigade comedian Laura Willcox, I AM BRIDE is a hysterical spoof of all the lavish, ridiculous, and stressful things a bride deals with when planning her BIG DAY.” - Publisher’s noteBig TakeawaysThe book is written in the voice of a wedding planner, but Laura explained that it is really her version of the collective voice of the wedding industrial complex. Imagine every over-the-top insane wedding stereotype you might have about florists charging premiums for dirt, planners that laugh maniacally when you share your budget, and a dress boutique saleswoman that suggests you get full body plastic surgery in order to fit into the ‘perfect’ gown...roll all these horrible people up with a dry, smart sense of humor...and you have the narrator of the book. This book is so sharp, y’all. It would make a great gift for your girlfriend that has fallen down the Pinterest rabbit hole. And if you’re a bride, it’s a pretty awesome gifts for your friends and attendants...anyone that will be on this wedding planning journey with you. It’s laugh out loud funny and totally outrageous, but it’s also a good reminder to stay grounded and not to let yourself get completely rolled over by all things wedding as you plan your own big day.Links we referencedLaura’s websites: http://laurawillcox.com/writing/ http://iambridebook.com/Buy it on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/AM-BRIDE-Wedding-Useful-Advice/dp/1419722204The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

Wedding Insurance is VERY important, but not discussed enough or thought about when planning a wedding. Todd Shasha, a Spokesperson for Travelers Insurance, walks us through the ins and outs of wedding insurance. We talk about what it is, why you need it, how much it costs and some examples highlighting exactly why the investment is worth it. Liability, cancellation, ‘event insurance’...let’s dive in!Big TakeawaysMany venues require liability insurance.Travelers bundles it’s special event insurance - per customer.(We are not sponsored by Travelers, btw. They contacted us wanting to talk about their product and why the topic is good for our podcast, and we agreed! If you want to look into event insurance, you can start online, and also contact your own homeowner insurance agent and see what they offer. Compare it all to Travelers and see what policy is best for you! Basically, we are encouraging all our listeners to consider event insurance for their wedding...lots of options, big price range...but we think if you are spending $20k or more on your wedding...you need insurance.)Weather is covered with these policies‘Change of Heart’ is not covered under the insurance policies.Links we referencedhttps://www.travelers.com/event-insurance - Travelers main sitehttps://www.protectmywedding.com - Travelers Event Insurance Site for online quoteshttps://www.zola.com - our fave place to register for wedding gifts and our sponsor! The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

Angry Moms, Possible Scams, Alcoholics At The Reception. We are answering listener questions as well as sharing some stories on this one.Big TakeawaysAs we often say on the podcast, keep it cool, people! Perspective. Stay grounded. Don’t get crazy. Remember, the wedding is just a party. The marriage is the important part. Sometimes parents are the ones who lose their minds and act irrationally...Christy shares a prime example of mom-crazy on this very episode! When some unexpected things occured, she lost her mind! Don’t be that mom.Listener email #1:I found a helluva deal online for photography and videography services for my wedding. It’s a nationwide company, and the prices are too good to be true! Our response: We don't suggest it. Nationwide companies like this outsource photographers and videographers in each market. In our experience, you just don't know who you are going to get. So even if the business part of the interaction all seems good and above-the-table, the actual 'professional' you get on the wedding day may not do a stellar job. Your photographs are such an important part of your wedding, the only thing you'll have when it's all over and done with...you don't want to trust that job to just anyone. You want a trained, personable, experienced professional. We think you should continue to dig, ask questions, and compare their prices with some other local photographers that own their own wedding photography business. And - remember, it’s very important to have a great personal connection with your photographer! They’re hanging out with you A LOT on your wedding day. You should like them.Listener email #2:My fiance’s family is full of alcoholics! How do we limit consumption at the reception so there isn’t any drama? Our response: Definitely don’t have an open bar! Beer and wine only helps a lot - no shots, no double potent mixed drinks. Or, consider having a bar during cocktail hour, then wine poured during dinner and that’s it! It’s your wedding, you can do what you want! We have lots of great advice on this one - we’ve been there! Marrying someone means that you get the family baggage...we wish you luck! Keeping on open line of communication and remaining diplomatic and calm will serve you well!We talked a lot about a specific escort card display - little scrolls hanging on champagne glasses. It was a really cool element of the wedding, but was logistically a little tough. We suggest using a shallow table to display the champagne flutes, and it works best if you have a small wedding, because you can spread the glasses out for guests to look at and find their name. Pics in the link below! Also in this ep - we read reviews. Our own reviews. Michelle’s favorite thing! Come on, share our joy - create our joy! Leave a review. *****Links we referencedChampagne scroll escort cards! The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

#69 - Happy Engagement!

Wednesday Jan 17, 2018

Wednesday Jan 17, 2018

We’re back in 2018 and so excited about all the awesome topics we’re going to tackle and the phenomenal guests we have on deck! Let’s have a quickie and catch-up!Big TakeawaysHere’s our news, in a nutshell: Michelle (Allure Consulting) moved to the Bay Area! We got through the holidays with our respective families and all the plans! Both Michelle and Christy are actively taking 2018 wedding inquiries! Happy New Year! Hit up Christy Matthews Events, or Allure Consulting if you need a wedding planner, a wedding consultant to help you tackle your budget or vision board, or any help at all with wedding-related issues. Links below.Historic hotels are beautiful wedding venues. They may also be haunted. Do your research! We reconnect with a listener that asked us about our thoughts on her side gig, a cake decorating business. Initially, we said, Don’t quit your day job! In a supportive way. And now that this listener is officially starting her business - we congratulate her and encourage her to ignore the haters! When you put yourself out there, you may get some reviews that aren’t glowing and that’s ok! Learn and move on. Dwelling on the negative just sucks.Another friendly reminder to hire vendors you really connect with and then TRUST them to execute the vision. If you trust your vendors, you sleep better and you’re not stressed out and obnoxious about wedding planning.Links we ReferencedAllure Consulting, Michelle’s company: http://www.allureconsulting.comChristy Matthews Events, Christy’s company: http://christymatthewsevents.comThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

We’re picking brains around here and this week, we’re lucky to have taken an hour of Beth Albright’s busy day. She is the Director of Development for a catering company in Dallas, TX - Food Glorious Food. She works directly with couples planning their wedding - both on the catering side, and as a venue contact. Beth might be the person that you meet on your first site visit to a venue - to see the space, and to talk about the venue’s policies. Some venues have on-site catering, some have preferred or required vendors lists for you to choose from, and some venues let you bring in a potluck. Which venue to choose is a very important decision! Beth breaks it down for us and answers lots of questions regarding food, beverage, and rentals while she’s at it.The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...

#67 The Second Time Around

Wednesday Jan 03, 2018

Wednesday Jan 03, 2018

Second time’s a charm! Our dear friend, Trisha Dean, shares her experience as she is in the middle of planning a big wedding. It’s her second big wedding to plan, and Michelle was her wedding planner for the first one!Trisha tells us all about planning a second wedding. It’s a first however for her fiance and it’s a destination wedding to boot! Trisha addresses how she has compromised along the way, how she has thrown out the ‘rules’ and why she is looking forward to her wedding day, especially this second time around.Big TakeawaysThere were lessons learned the first time around, and one of them was putting importance on how you want your wedding weekend to be - like how you want to experience the city, your wedding day and the day before and after, how you want your guests to feel being a part of everything...this is something that Trisha and Sutton put a lot of weight on. The weekend will be an experience for the guests...their best friends and family members will have a truly memorable weekend. The gown. Can a bride wear white the second time around? Hell yes! Are princess ball gowns pasé if you’re over 30 years old? Hell no! Just because you’ve been a bride before, that doesn’t mean you are any less of a bride now. Trisha tried on A LOT of dresses. She wants to feel and look amazing - of course!Advice:Get a videographer - Trisha is SO glad she splurged on this for her first wedding and the video is one of her very favorite keepsakes (yes, even though the marriage didn’t last forever). She made sure to get one for her second wedding as well.Take your time. Especially if there are kids involved. You’ve already done this once, what’s the rush this time? If you feel like you are rushing, ask yourself why. Introspection is key here - don’t do anything unless you can do it with confidence, together. Trisha thinks you need a year to plan a wedding if you are going to be picky about wedding details and elements.Budgeting is all about compromise. Trisha initially wanted a smaller, simple wedding, largely in part to her knowledge of how much this all costs. But when Sutton wanted to have a big wedding and invite many of his friends, Trisha didn’t question him. She knew how important it was to him, so blowing the budget up was a no-brainer. No Regrets!Including the kids: As far as Trisha is concerned, this wedding belongs to her daughter just as much as it’s hers.Do whatever makes you happy! Trisha and Sutton scrapped all the pre-wedding stuff and instead are having a three day long weekend for their destination wedding. And instead of having designated bridesmaids and groomsmen, they are asking specific people to stay in the venue with them to party all weekend as VIPs. No matching bridesmaid’s dresses for this wedding!Links we referencedWedding Website Trisha loves: Bliss and Bone - https://blissandbone.comThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

Ooh Lala...We are heading into uncharted wedding podcast territory with this one and we are SO EXCITED! In this episode, we talk about sex, baby! A healthy sex life is very important to a healthy relationship. Dr. Magdalena Fosse helps us define ‘healthy’, plus, she talks a lot about pleasure. This is part 2 of 2 with Dr. Magdalena Fosse. In Part 1 (Ep #65), we discussed relationships, communication, and perspective. So, let’s do this!Big TakeawaysShift your expectations for a more satisfying Sex Life. This starts with education! Learn about your own body, find out what feels good, talk about what you like and what intrigues you! Also, remember that our bodies change as we age. Our expectations should evolve too.If you are a woman (we think most of our listeners are) and you have thought to yourself, “Wow, I can’t seem to have an orgasm when we have regular old P-in-th-V sex! Something must be wrong with me.” - Magdalena talks about that old Freudian legacy - it’s a myth! Most women need clitoral stimulation to orgasm, and that’s just a fact. See? The more you know, the more accurate your expectations, and the more satisfying your sex life. Boom.In America, there is a stigma of shame around talking about sex. People talk about sex all the time, but it’s either in a joking way, or a whispered way. Magdalena encourages us to ignore that stupid stigma! Shame is when we feel like something is wrong with us, at our core. And there isn’t anything wrong with sex, if you aren’t hurting anyone. With a sexual partner that you want to have a long and fruitful sex life with, positive feedback is essential. Tell them what to do, rather than what not to do. Delivery matters! You can be encouraging and specific, and you can motivate your partner to keep doing what feels great.Your brain is your biggest sexual organ. Anticipation is sexy! Looking forward to something is part of the fun! There is a direct line between desire and arousal. A man tends to feel desirable when he is physically, noticeably aroused. But seeing an aroused man doesn’t just automatically turn most women on. What does turn most women on - what arouses most women - is the feeling of being desired. Feel desirable, get aroused. Part of the foreplay is mental!Break out of the routine with your partner - boring efficiency is a killer of sex lives. You have to put effort into your sex like - it shouldn't feel obligatory, it should feel exciting. It won’t always feel exciting, but if you take more initiative and plant seeds of anticipation with your partner, your sex life will be more exciting, more often.Links we referencedDr. Magdalena Fosse: Clinical Psychologist, Certified Sex Therapist and Couple’s Counselor: www.drfosse.comPCFINE, Psychodynamic Couple and Family Institute of New England: https://www.pcfine.orgSSTAR to find a qualified Sex Therapist: http://www.sstar.orgThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

Learn how you and your partner can set the groundwork for a healthy, happy marriage while you are planning your wedding! As wedding planners, we delve into the logistics of wedding planning. Obviously. We work with people in the middle of a stressful, exciting time of their lives. A wedding is a big deal! We believe that the event of a wedding should be an elevated moment in your life. We also have been around a while, and as married people ourselves, we know that the real work is in the marriage, not the wedding planning. In this episode, we are NOT the experts! We are learning right along with you, dear listeners. Dr. Magdalena Fosse (all information in the links below) is a sex and relationship therapist based in Cambridge, MA, and in this episode, she schools us. Cliff Notes: IT’S ALL ABOUT COMMUNICATION.Big TakeawaysCommunication is key, absolutely.More couples seek therapy in crisis, rather than as a proactive way to get on the same page, or develop healthy tools. So when crisis does strike, and it will, the partners don’t even know where to begin unraveling the mess and coming to terms about how to move forward. One key to success lies in gratitude, and perspective. John Gottman’s theory is the ratio of negative to positive should be 1 to 5. The small, positive interactions with your partner, in your life together, should outweigh the negative ones by 5.4 signs that your relationship may be in big trouble: Contempt, Defensiveness, Criticism, Stone-Walling.Make sure you are affirming your partner. Two topics Magdalena thinks every couple should openly address: Pleasure and Expectations about sex. This is the person you want to spend the rest of your life with! You gotta be open and honest about this stuff! The presence of conflict is not the problem in a relationship. It’s normal, natural and present. The absence of repair is the problem.Slow down! Learn how to prevent a big escalation together. Practice makes perfect. Get better, as a couple, after each argument or tough discussion. And remember – if things between you two are ‘good’ 70-80% of the time, you’re doing great! Consistency is key.Links we referencedwww.drfosse.comhttps://www.pcfine.orgwww.gottman.comThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

Trish Dove, owner of Beatbox Studios in DFW, is a wedding photographer. She is full of tips and tricks for awesome photo sessions, and she’s sharing them on the podcast! Also, the very best thing about Trish is how she immediately connects with couples, and how she fosters that connection throughout the planning process for an end result of relaxed, happy, confident lovebugs enjoying the hell out of their wedding day. And the photos...tdf.Big TakeawaysPersonality matters! There are many photographers to choose from. If you hire someone with lots of experience, a great portfolio and nice equipment...you’re going to get good photos. But hiring someone that you LOVE, that you click with, that you feel a great vibe with...that is going to make the experience of your wedding day, and your wedding planning, SO much more enjoyable. Trish is a photographer that seals the deal with clients after a face-to-face meeting. Her personality and energy is what sets her apart. Getting to pick her brain about this whole process is fascinating!Trish’s Routine for Kick Ass Pre-Ceremony photo sessions:Set the scene. Favorite music and a little booze helps!Natural, candid photos take a little choreography...Trish is great at this because she does it in a sneaky way. Instead of explicitly telling a couple what to do with their bodies and how to look at each other, Trish will set some other kind of action in motion, knowing that the end result will be the adorable kiss that they wantPick a place that means something to you, if possible. If you hire an awesome photographer, they may go out to the location and scout around for ideas. Trish did that once and discovered a mini donkey named White Boy. He made the final cut and the photos are adorable.Professional hair and makeupFor ladies, Trish recommends hair down or half down...once it’s up, it pretty much needs to stay up, so starting with it down and then putting it up halfway through the session is a great idea.Bring a couple outfits! Text your photographer your outfit options ahead of time. You’ll get the wheels turning before you even show up.The day before and the morning of your photo session - drink a lot of water! It helps make your skin and eyes look great.First LookDetailsBig Farewell! If you have more than 150 guests, or multiple locations on the wedding day, you need a second shooter with your main photographer. And you need your photographer for a minimum of 6 hours on your wedding day. 8 hour is ideal.Links we referencedWhere to find Trish onlineWebsiteInstagramFacebookThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

#63 Set-up & Breakdown

Wednesday Dec 06, 2017

Wednesday Dec 06, 2017

This is an educational episode! We are zooming in on two specifics parts of the wedding day timeline - the set-up and the breakdown. How much time do you need to allocate for these parts of the day? What exactly happens during set-up anyway? Can’t we ‘breakdown’ in 10 minutes if we get all of our friends to help at midnight? (NO.) We answer these and many more questions as we address two important parts of your wedding day. Don’t forget about these details...they start to add up and being organized as you go will help relieve some wedding planning stress!Big TakeawaysFirst, we had a listener leave an awesome iTunes review! Michelle and Christy LOVE these reviews - thank you! The more you rate and review, the more visible we are to people searching for a new podcast to listen to. We invite you all to send us your questions - thebigweddingplanningpodcast@gmail.com. The more specific, the better! In the most basic terms: you need at least 2 hours for set-up and 1 hour for breakdown is pretty standard.A tiny set-up window can cost you extra money because vendors may raise prices in order to load in during that small, specific window.‘Getting Ready’ is a big part of the wedding day timeline. Hair, Makeup, First Look, Family Portraits...lots goes on in the couple of hours before your ceremony begins. And none of this fun stuff counts as ‘set-up’!Tables have to be set on the floor before the linens can be set up. Linens have to be on the tables before the florist can set up. The cake baker needs her cake table in place, dressed and needs the flowers from the florist ready to go when the she arrives with the cake. Lots of moving parts, y’all! You are going to have many tangible items that you want set up at your wedding ceremony or reception. Start a list! For example: escort cards, table numbers, chuppah, toasting flutes, pictures, cake knife and server, flowers, decorations, linens, favors, programs, signage, lawn games… Consider how long it will take to set these up.If your DJ or musicians or AV company recommends you book a dedicated sound technician for a couple of hours, do it. Consider it insurance.Links we referencedOur Podcast, Eps 17, 18, 20 - the 3-part Timeline Series - listen to this for a greater scope of how to create your wedding day timelineThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.
