One of our most popular episodes! We are busy wedding planners preparing for some awesome future shows. In the meantime...You're going to LOVE this one!You are going to LOVE cake celebrity Lauren Kitchens! If you heard our Pilot episode and the mention of "fake" wedding cakes, you're going to want to listen to this one. Lauren is the owner of Fancy Cakes by Lauren, in Dallas Texas. Lauren has been featured on the Food Network several times and happens to be a dear friend of Christy's.In this episode, Lauren and Christy talk about the ins and outs of wedding cakes, how to find the baker you want to work with, how much you can expect to spend, logistics of cutting the cake and why cakes remain an important part of the wedding day.Big TakeawaysListen in as Christy & Lauren sit down in the 'recording studio' (aka Christy's Master Bedroom closet) and talk about the world of wedding cakes. Lauren has been baking cakes professionally for over 10 years.Being on TV isn’t necessarily the height of your career. Building a business that prioritizes the client experience and values quality over quantity is far more successful in the long run. Lauren Kitchens proves that every day with Fancy Cakes.Grooms Cakes! Dude, where’s my cake? Grooms Cakes in the South -- a tradition that is not going anywhere. From simple chocolate cakes with chocolate covered strawberries (how retro!) to cake sculptures of bass fish and college football stadiums...the Grooms Cakes are here to stay and in Lauren’s world, they are getting more and more over the top - even costing more than the extravagant wedding cake in many instances. Check out her Instagram page to see these works of art!Fake Cakes. Or fake tiers. It’s a thing, deal with it. Sometimes a fake cake is necessary when the design of the cake can’t be supported by good old fashioned flour and water. Sometimes a fake tier is necessary to support the weight of 200 orchids stabbed into it by a florist. Sometimes Lauren makes wedding cakes that are 6’ tall and all fake. She’s an artist, I tell you! An artist!Links we referenced

#61 Yoga Bride - Lauren Star

Wednesday Nov 22, 2017

Wednesday Nov 22, 2017

Michelle welcomes her dear friend and yoga teacher to the podcast today - don’t call her a guru! Lauren Star practices meditation, mindfulness and yoga - and she thought that wedding planning was going to be a breezy dream. Well, it wasn’t! What?? It was overwhelming and Lauren and her partner didn’t know what they were getting into. Like we always say, You don’t know what you don’t know! So, we talk to Lauren about her experiences wedding planning. And a lot about why she is so happy that Michelle was her planner, and how important having a planner actually turned out to be. Michelle fawns over Lauren a bit too, because this lovey-dovey feeling is mutual! The best kind.Big TakeawaysFirst, we had a listener question to answer regarding potted plants, greenery for wedding decor. We think that the pot is very important in this case - is a terracotta pot from Home Depot something that fits in with the ceremony decor, particularly if it’s an indoor venue? Think about that. Also, remember that a beautiful potted plant might cost just as much or more than a centerpiece or altar piece from a florist. We think greenery can look cool and pretty and photogenic, but err on the side of more, rather than less. Make sure the overall look is lush and has lots of height and type variation. Good luck!Succulents: they aren’t just trendy! They’re also sturdy and can be colorful. They transport easily and are easy DIY projects. They aren’t too expensive and you can take them home with you after the wedding.Even the most easy-going couple needs to actually plan a little. Ok, a lot, to be honest. You can have a laid-back potluck wedding in your backyard, your friends can bring flowers and cake, and you can ad lib your vows if you want...but weddings still cost money. They take planning. You need to talk to your partner - even if it’s overwhelming and you don’t know where the heck to start - you need to talk about the budget and the guestlist when you begin. Minimum!Money talk can stress people out, for sure. As Lauren watched her budget inflate, she turned to her yoga practice to deal with the stress. Also, she recognized that they needed HELP. In the form of a wedding planner.Lauren looked at weight loss and getting in shape while wedding planning, for the first time in her life. And instead of obsessing over it in an unhealthy way, she learned lots of great information and felt that the whole experience was really educational and empowering. Which is awesome!Family. Lauren and her fiance were blown away by how much their family wanted to be a part of their wedding. They were surprised by how much people wanted to participate and how much people CARED. In the end, everyone got to pitch in and the whole thing was a group effort. Lauren felt closer to her family after the wedding, and felt so so grateful. People want to help, we encourage you to say YES!What’s an easy way to calm down and focus? Lauren tells us how to simply set your cell phone timer and sit down. Be quiet. Breathe. 2 minutes, y’all! It goes a long way!Links we referencedGreat Decor/Craft store (bud vases we mentioned)Lauren Star's WebsiteLauren on YoutubeThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

#58 The Happiest Sad Day

Wednesday Nov 01, 2017

Wednesday Nov 01, 2017

For some people, wedding planning happens to coincide with a devastating life crisis. We listen to a bride tell her story of the loss of her mother and grief during her wedding planning. Wedding planning can be stressful. We talk about that all the time on this podcast. And as a bride or groom, you deal with the stress the best you can - we talk about how to minimize stress, stay organized and grounded, and about keeping things in perspective as you go on the wedding planning journey. The goal is to have a wonderful wedding day, and to be able to enjoy every moment of it. But what happens when things don’t go according to plan? Life can throw a lot at you at once.Big TakeawaysTrigger warning: This episode of The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is about terminal cancer. Lauren lost her mom to cancer after an 18 month struggle, and that time period was also when Lauren and her partner Blake were planning their wedding. It was the happiest saddest day, ultimately, and we are honored that Lauren told her story for us.When wedding planning starts to feel all-encompassing, take a step back. Really evaluate where you are in life, what you have to be grateful for, and why you want to marry your partner! Focus on the love. Hug your parents. Say thank you. Call the people in your life that you love, and that love you and tell them you love them!Things got VERY tough for Lauren. The news seemed to be bad every time she talked to her mom, and her mom was insisting that she keep her wedding plans in place - it was all she had to look forward to. The pressure was intense, and the sadness and helplessness were present every day. These feelings and this reality followed Lauren to dress fittings and cake tastings, and home at the end of the day for her to unpack with her partner Blake. At times, the ONLY thing Lauren was sure about was that she was marrying the right guy, and that she was so happy to be doing so. Her actual current relationship with Blake was what kept her going, and gave her some peace, some strength and the energy to keep moving forward, under impossible circumstances. That is a true testament to love, and to the whole point of marriage itself. On the day of the rehearsal, Lauren visited her mom at the hospice facility. Then she drove straight to her wedding rehearsal and endured the whole thing in a shell-shocked state, beaten down by the saddest circumstances, missing her mom, questioning her choices, and feeling extremely annoyed with her husband-to-be.On the wedding day - Lauren felt like everyone was looking at her with sympathy about her mom. Her mom was in hospice less than 5 miles away, and her presence was felt at the wedding...mainly through the friends of her mom, who Lauren considered surrogates. Ultimately, Lauren was able to be fully present in her wedding day - as it was, not as she wished it had been.Lauren’s advice, for anyone going through this or something similar: find a way to honor your person on the wedding day, in private or public. And if possible - err on the side of visiting your loved one too many times. The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

#57 A Wedding Day Story

Wednesday Oct 25, 2017

Wednesday Oct 25, 2017

Michelle manages the impossible on this one when she takes her microphone along on a wedding day. Listen in as Michelle, Stephanie & Ryan tell the story of the wedding on the ACTUAL wedding day. Hearing the perspectives not only of the Bride and Groom, but also of their Planner. Congratulations Stephanie & Ryan!Big TakeawaysEvery couple has a story - how they met, why they fell in love, and what dreams they have for their life together. Listening to Stephanie and Ryan talk about their wedding - on their wedding day - allows us insight into their story. How cool! Big thank you to the lovely couple for letting TBWPP document their big day in such a cool way.Stephanie’s grandmother gives her a lace handkerchief to carry on her wedding day - it was a gift handed down to the matriarchs in her family for decades, passed from moms to daughters and aunts and sisters...everyone that has carried the handkerchief is still married! Gifts like these, with history, and passed down with love, make for memorable, emotional moments on the wedding day. We LOVE moments like these. Michelle ended up tying the handkerchief and a necklace to the bridal bouquet - so sweet and meaningful.Michelle talks to Stephanie literally minutes before she walks down the aisle. Hearing a bride put into words how she feels in that moment is pretty amazing. Stephanie inadvertently drops some very good wedding day advice - stay in the moment. Remember to enjoy the wedding day...and the best way to do this is to just settle into gratitude.Confetti - it may be messy to clean up, but take it from us: Guests love it. And the photos are so cool.If you hire a wedding photographer and a videographer, be prepared for some level of distraction. Both visually and audibly...the moving around and the clicking and the flashing...it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. You will notice it. It’s a small sacrifice because you will have such an amazing document of your wedding day, but you may be distracted, or even a little thrown off, by it on the wedding day. Unless you’re used to being followed around by the paparazzi.Links we referencedHow I Built This One of Michelle's favorite podcasts to listen toStephanie’s WebsiteMichelle’s BusinessThe Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

Michelle deals with a ‘first’ in her illustrious wedding planning career, and we round it out with some great, applicable advice about what to do if your wedding is affected by crazy weather and potentially dangerous conditions. A skateboarding accident isn’t a natural disaster, but we’re still gonna talk about it! Christy and Michelle catch up in the midst of a very busy wedding season.Big TakeawaysWe’re multitasking mamas. We dish out some parenting advice in this one - basically, put wrist and knee pads on your skateboarding kids, and lead by example!Wedding Crashers is a funny movie, but it’s not cool in real life! Michelle relied on the awesome hotel event staff at her wedding and they dealt with a belligerent wedding crasher together. This is most likely to happen when the wedding takes place at a big hotel, especially a hotel with more than one wedding on property at a time. One of the pros of having a wedding planner is that issues like this get dealt with behind the scenes, and you (as the couple) don’t even know about it until afterwards! Ideally…A Natural disaster can add a huge amount of stress to an already stressful wedding planning process, that’s for sure. Decisions have to be made late in the game, and they’re not decisions anyone wants to have to make. Remember, if you are dealing with something like this - safety first. If a cancellation call has to be made, make it. It sucks, but your guests will celebrate with you upon rescheduling. It’s rare that extreme weather or ‘Acts of God’ actually affect wedding planning, but if they do, you’ll be happy you listened to this podcast so you know what to do first, second and third! In short, if you hired a wedding planner, you’ll call her first - she should help if she’s able, and communicate with vendors on your behalf. (And you’ll be happy you hired a wedding planner when you started the process! Good for you!)Wedding Insurance. We don’t talk about this a lot on the podcast, but we’re going to from now on, cause shit’s just getting crazy out there! Basically, you need it. There are two types: LIABILITY and CANCELLATION - a lot of venues require you to have liability insurance, it costs about $150 and covers you for up to a million in damages or accidents. You get it for one day, and you can ask your insurance agent about adding it to your homeowners policy if you have one. Or, check out the two websites we listed! Cancellation insurance is supplemental to liability, so you’d be paying separately for it. It protects you in the event that you cancel or reschedule your wedding...it protects you financially and reimburses your deposits and retainers if your vendors won’t. We suggest both.Links we referencedInstagram baker we think is awesome: https://www.instagram.com/paperheartpatisserie/Wedding Insurance: http://www.wedsure.com https://www.wedsafe.comChristy’s article in Love Wins Texas: https://www.lovewinstexas.com/2017/10/10/natural-disaster-affects-wedding-plans/The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

Lots of couples are opting to have a friend or relative be their wedding officiant. You may have to draft the bulk of the script yourself, as a couple. if you have a friend who graciously accepted your request to legally marry you, you can’t expect this friend of yours to write the script in it’s entirety! This job is collaborative.A Basic Non-Denominational Outline:ProcessionalOpening Words / Introduction / Welcome‘Who gives away?’ or ‘We Do’s’ from the guestsReading - definition of marriage, thoughts on lovePersonal anecdotes - let the guests know a little about each of you, and your journey as a coupleVows - I Do’s. These can be spoken by the officiant and repeated by you both, or you can both just answer ‘I Do’ to the officiant’s prompts, or you can write your own vows and read them to each otherSecond Reading - maybe by a guestRings ExchangeClosing by Officiant - sanctity of marriageDeclaration of Marriage - “I know pronounce you Wife and Wife”Kiss!RecessionalLink The Spruce The Everything Wedding Vows BookFinal Tip: Don’t wait until the last minute to work on your ceremony script. And make sure you rehearse your personal vows a few times before the big day. It’s emotional, you want to be able to get through them authentically, but clearly! Also, we highly recommend a rehearsal! The Big Wedding Planning Podcast is...Hosted and produced by Michelle Martinez.

#54 Quick Focus! The Guest Book

Wednesday Oct 04, 2017

Wednesday Oct 04, 2017

What is a guest book? Is it necessary? Is it something our parents had at their wedding that we want too, or is it old fashioned and uncool? Listen to this short episode and find out!A guest book is traditional, easy, decorative, personal...and in our opinion - necessary! All you need is a book, pens, and a flat surface for guests to work on. The guest book is a keepsake and we think they’re great! Some ideas:-Coffee Table Book - Big, hard cover, glossy photos. A book made to display. Architecture, awesome city you love - Paris, vintage Italian black and white fashion photos, Vogue lookbook...-Atlas or Geographically specific book - your hometown, the wedding location, your favorite place in the world, your honeymoon destination…in a book of maps, guests can circle and sign next to their favorite cities if they want to, or sign on a page that depicts a place you have been together-Photo Album of you two - your lives together, or your professional engagement pics-Large Photo or Mat-Artwork on canvas-Custom art prints - Etsy has lots of these to choose from-Individual items...pieces of a Jenga game!-One large item that everyone signs...like a magnum wine bottle!-Something the guest does...takes a selfie, fingerprint, message request (rules for the happy couple... #53 Big Ideas, Little Budget

Wednesday Sep 27, 2017

Wednesday Sep 27, 2017

A listener with a 10K Budget that was shot down by a wedding planner / Michelle tells you all about a wedding she worked last weekend / Yoga and morning routines. Before we jump into an awesome listener’s question about how to make the most of her small wedding budget, we discuss the MANY virtues of yoga! It’s good for your body, good for your mind, and good for keeping things nice and grounded during wedding planning! We are especially fond of a nice, relaxing, mindful morning routine...even if it’s only 5 minutes, it matters.Big TakeawaysSince it’s smack dab in the middle of wedding season as we record this episode, we have some big plans for our Quick Focus episodes. Short, informative episodes that break something down...guest books and wedding ceremony scripts are on deck for upcoming episodes. If you are working with a modest wedding budget - don’t despair! You can still have a nice wedding.Breaking down a wedding budget is all about allocation. The easiest way to cut money out of your wedding is by cutting the guest list.Consider having a small ceremony with close friends only - maybe at City Hall - and then you can have a party later with more guests.Keep in mind that there are lots of reasons why a wedding vendor may be willing to negotiate...you won’t know for sure if you don’t ask.Pull some strings! If you can’t afford a wedding planner, you should absolutely be listening to our podcast! We have an episode about wedding budgets and it’s not all fluff, we’re really breaking it down and we base it on percentages. We also have 3 episodes all about the wedding day timeline...this is work that a wedding planner would take on. It’s detail oriented and it’s not sexy, but you can do it! The more organized you are, the more you’ll be able to stretch your budget. Our podcast is like having a wedding planner in your pocket throughout the planning process...if you have questions, we have answers!
